Can I fix my own light switch safely without an electrician?

You can replace a basic light switch yourself if you shut off the breaker and confirm the power is off. If the wiring is confusing, it’s a 3-way/4-way circuit, there’s aluminum wiring, a dimmer, or any scorch marks, hire an electrician. Incorrect connections can cause breakers to trip or wires to overheat.

Quick checks:

  • Turn off the correct breaker and verify no power with a non-contact tester.
  • Photograph the wiring before removal.
  • Label wires and match them to the new switch terminals.
  • Reinstall the plate and test.
